LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR VARGRAVE RICHARDS ADVANCES AGREEMENT TO INCREASE
PARKING ACCESSIBILITY IN DOWNTOWN CHRISTIANSTED
Lieutenant Governor Vargrave Richards advanced an agreement to institute
two-hour parking limits in the business center of downtown Christiansted.
The Lieutenant Governor said, "The people who are concerned about
parking and want to go shopping will now be able to park quickly, go
shopping within an hour or two, and leave. This will enable some movement
for the restaurants and retailers, as well as help the owners increase
the number of people coming into their businesses. It's a two-way street.
It's a win-win situation."
A public-private partnership, the agreement was signed by the Lieutenant
Governor, Police Commissioner Elton Lewis, Public Works Commissioner
Wayne Callwood, and Christiansted Restaurant and Retail Association
President Julia Renfro.
Installation of street signs is under way, notifying the public of
parking limits on Queen Cross Street from Company Street to the waterfront;
and on Company Street from Church Street to Queen Cross Street.
The business sector pledged its support of the Lieutenant Governor's
initiative.
"This should be tremendous," said CRRA President Julia Renfro.
"Those 35 spaces, if you flip them over every two hours, you're
talking about 140 parking spaces. So you can come in town, do business,
shop and find a parking space very close to where you want to have lunch.
We think it will make Christiansted very customer friendly."
