LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR VARGRAVE RICHARDS PROMPTS IMMEDIATE JUMP-START OF
ROADSIDE GRASS AND BUSH CUTTING ACROSS ST. CROIX
Lieutenant Governor Vargrave Richards today directed the appropriate
government authorities to immediately resume the clearing of bush and
grass, which has been growing wildly along the roadsides of St. Croix
and posing undue danger to motorists and pedestrians alike.
"Due to the number of calls I received, I directed the assistant
commissioner of Public Works to start the roadside cutting of grass
and bush," Richards said. "It is an eyesore."
The Lieutenant Governor reported that funding will be released in a
cooperative effort by the Department of Public Works, Anti-Litter and
Beautification Commission, and St. Croix Foundation for Community Development
to expedite the bush- and grass-cutting efforts on St. Croix.
The first priority will be to clear the roadsides of bush from Carambola
Golf Course to Carambola Beach Resort in order to make these roads safer
for a major golfing event this weekend, Teens on the Green, during which
dozens of teens from around the world will be competing for an international
title and touring St. Croix with their families.
"We must make sure that the entire island's roadsides are taken
care of," Lieutenant Governor Richards concluded. "It is imperative
that we ensure the safety of our residents and visitors. Beautification
is fundamental to pride in our island, and can pave the way toward long-term
economic revitalization."
