Lt. Governor Vargrave Richards
Encourages Residents to Prepare for the
2006 Hurricane Season
Lieutenant Governor Vargrave Richards,
in his capacity as Commissioner of
Insurance, advises all residents of the
Virgin Islands of the importance of
being prepared this hurricane season.
"As we approach the beginning of the
2006 hurricane season, and with recent
forecasts predicting above normal
activity, it is imperative that we take
all necessary precautions," Lt. Governor
Richards said. "First and foremost, I
encourage all residents of this
Territory to be ready in the event of a
major hurricane. That includes stocking
up on water, canned goods, batteries and
having a portable radio available."
Lt. Governor Richards also advises all
home and property owners to acquire
proper insurance. The Office of the
Lieutenant Governor Division of Banking
and Insurance stands ready to assist
those homeowners with questions about
obtaining property insurance or filing
insurance claims.
"I remind all homeowners that there are
discounts available for homes that meet
or exceed hurricane building codes and
for members of the AARP (American
Association of Retired Persons)," Lt.
Governor Richards added. "Through
diligent efforts, we have increased our
insurance capacity and now have more
insurance carriers in the Territory than
before I took office. It is important
that homeowners take advantage of this
increase in insurance."
Finally, Lt. Governor Richards wishes
all residents a safe and uneventful
hurricane season.
"We all hope for the best this hurricane
season, but we need to be prepared for
the worst," he said.
